La Com installs LED lighting in schools!

The community is taking advantage of the summer break to carry out improvement work in public schools.

The 17 schools will receive new LED lighting. Installation has begun and will be completed in 2023.

This work program aims to improve the daily lives of students, teachers and supervisors. Thus, the community acts on several axes:

1- The installation of LED lighting
2- Replacement of the ceiling fans
3- Various renovation works

New methods to strengthen child protection introduced

The Court of Guardianship (CoG), with technical support from UNICEF the Netherlands and Augeo Foundation, are introducing new protocols and methods to tackle child abuse and neglect together with children, parents and professionals on the island.

Some activities include restructuring the central (advice and) reporting centre for child abuse within CoG, introducing rapid social support for children who witness domestic violence through the ‘Handle with Care’ method, and implementing ‘Child Check’ in healthcare and emergency institutions to help detect child abuse or neglect.

Child protection professionals and stakeholders were invited to sensitization and implementation sessions to ensure the new protocols and methods are realistic and practical. Invited were professionals working in the healthcare sector, educational institutions, and the justice system, such as the Police Department.

The Ministry of Finance hopes to attract young professionals to join the pilot program for corporate governance and supervisory board member traineeship.

The program, tailor-made by Themis Institute for Governance & Leadership, teaches about good corporate governance and becoming a member of a Supervisory Board or Managing Board.

This pilot program is the first of its kind within the Dutch Caribbean Countries. It entails developing theoretical knowledge of corporate governance and on-site learning experiences of the functioning of board practices by attending a supervisory board meeting(s).

While I am delighted that the State is increasing the aid allocated to local authorities for the collection of seaweed, with State funding increasing from 50 to 80% until October 15, we must accelerate and innovate on the fight against sargassum.

I went to the sites of Cul-de-Sac and Quartier d’Orléans and I was able to see the ecological and health disaster. Also, it seems more than urgent that a strong response be given to the crisis linked to the massive stranding of Sargassum, with in particular a collection upstream at sea.
